7 Tips for V-Belts to Last Longer

June 23, 2021

V-belts don't usually get a lot of attention, but you'll find that a little effort goes a long way in maintaining optimum efficiency, extending their life, reducing maintenance costs and preventing machine breakdowns. China V-Belt Manufacturer has seven tips to make your V-belts more efficient and last longer:.

Use the right installation procedures

When installing a new V-belt, it's tempting to simply roll it onto the drive. This may save a few minutes, but it can actually be very dangerous if you don't loosen the motor first. In addition to being unsafe, the belt and sheaves can be damaged, and you can put excessive loads on the belt and support bearings and shaft.

Choosing the right size belt

Over the years, V-belts have undergone significant technological developments in terms of new materials, construction methods, advances in tensile cords and cross-sectional profiles.  They come in many different sizes, widths and profiles, and for best performance you need to choose the right belt for your application. Loose belts can negatively affect their efficiency and life, so make sure the wheel grooves match and that it fits well.

Check the wheel for wear regularly

Surprisingly, many users repeatedly replace V-Belts without checking the sheaves for signs of wear.  It is important to note that groove sidewalls are recessed and/or polished groove sidewalls are angled.  Worn, broken or damaged pulleys can reduce the life of the belt by up to 50% and therefore need to be replaced immediately.  Instead of ignoring pulley wear by simply re-tensioning the belt, get yourself an inexpensive pulley groove measuring tool or gauge - it will save money and extend the life of the belt.

Proper Pulley Alignment

Proper pulley alignment is an important step in making a V-belt last. Laser tools are the fastest and most accurate means of ensuring horizontal and vertical alignment.  There are many different models of specialized laser tools available for belt alignment, all of which will result in less wear on pulleys, belts, bearings and seals, reduced vibration levels and increased efficiency.

Correctly tensioning belts

A belt tensioning tool is the best way to properly tension your belt to make it last longer. If you rely on "feel", you may find it difficult to achieve the correct tension, which will affect the life of your belt.  If the tension is too low, it can lead to high temperatures, excessive noise and cause the belt to slip. If the tension is too high, the belt will break and bearing life will be drastically reduced.

Ensure proper ventilation

One of the keys to extending belt life is to keep the temperature as low as possible. To mitigate the high heat generated by continuous bending around the wheels, make sure the belt guard area is properly ventilated.

Check tension often after break-in

Once the belt has been heated and stretched a little, the belt tension will change, so it is important to check it quickly and tighten it as necessary to ensure the tension is correct. Many mechanics don't do this, but it's a really important step that can greatly increase the life of a V-belt. To maintain horizontal angle alignment, it is best to use a laser tool.
High loads, high temperatures, incorrect tensioning, worn pulleys, misalignment, and dirt, oil and grease between the belt and pulleys can all damage the efficiency and life of your belt. Taking the time to do a few things during installation and maintenance of your V-belt can make your V-belt last longer, prevent machine breakdowns, and avoid unnecessary and unplanned downtime.
