Working Process Analysis of The V-belt Drive

August 18, 2021

Here we agriculture v-belt manufacturer share with you the characteristics of work process, to help you know better of the v-belt drive principle.

Power transmission capacity

As with all mechanical drives, the basic purpose of a belt drive is to transfer motion and power from one shaft to another. Since a belt drive is a friction drive, the power transmission capacity depends primarily on the frictional characteristics of the mating surfaces. Whenever the load exceeds the frictional force, sliding automatically occurs. The higher the coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley, the higher the transmission capacity; however, there will also be more heat and wear. Instead of increasing the coefficient of friction directly, the coefficient of friction is increased indirectly by replacing the flat belt with an agricultural v-belt. It can be demonstrated that the effective friction coefficient of a V-belt is 2-3 times higher than that of a flat belt of the same material (based on the V-angle of the belt, which is usually 40°).

Distance between shafts

The appropriate mechanical drive is selected according to the center distance between the drive and driven shafts. For example, gear drives are suitable for small center distances, typically up to 1 m. Chain drives can be used for small to medium distances, typically up to 3 m with the help of idle sprockets. belt drives are available for various center distances - from below 1 m to up to 15 m. Flat belt drives are particularly suitable for long power transmission distances; agri v-belts are only suitable for small distances (typically below 1 m). 1m or less).

Speed reduction

The machine unit is driven by the prime mover. Usually, the drive shaft of the prime mover rotates at a higher speed than that required by the driven shaft of the machine. Therefore it is necessary to reduce the speed, which can be done by changing the diameter of the drive and driven wheels. However, each mechanical drive can vary the speed ratio within a certain range. Flat belt drives can provide a reduction of up to 1:4; higher values will unfavorably increase slip. V-belts provide higher deceleration, even up to 1:7, due to a higher effective coefficient of friction.

Conveyor movement

Sometimes a single machine unit needs to change speed during different phases of operation. In addition, a single prime mover can be used to drive multiple machines, each requiring a different operating speed. In this case, stepped pulleys are used, where several pulleys of different diameters are mounted on a single shaft. If a flat belt is used, then the belt can be easily transferred from one pulley to another in the operating condition. Thus, the speed of the driven shaft can be changed without stopping the drive unit (a mechanical adjustment of the belt length is highly required to maintain the belt tension.) V-belt drives do not offer such variable speed devices, as they require special pulleys with V-grooves.

Economic aspects

Tightening of the flat belt and the corresponding pulley is simple. The length of the flat can also be adjusted several times, as it is connected by nuts and bolts. The long service life and the simple construction make this drive cheaper. the V-belt and the corresponding pulley are more costly. Its length is not adjustable and its service life is shorter.
