The V-Belt (also V-belt, vee belt, rubber belt or, less commonly, wedge cord) solves the problem of slippage and alignment. It is now the basic belt for power transmission. They offer the best combination of traction, speed of movement, load on bearings and long service life. They are generally endless and their general cross-sectional shape is roughly trapezoidal (hence the name "V"). The "V" shape of the belt runs in the mating groove of the pulley (or pulleys), with the result that the belt cannot slip. As the load increases, the belt also tends to wedge into the grooves - the greater the load, the greater the wedging action - improving torque transmission and making the V-belt an effective solution that requires less width and tension than a flat belt.
